Across the Universe by Beth Revis

Publisher’s Summary: A love out of time. A spaceship built of secrets and murder.

Seventeen-year-old Amy joins her parents as frozen cargo aboard the vast spaceship Godspeed and expects to awaken on a new planet, three hundred years in the future. Never could she have known that her frozen slumber would come to an end fifty years too soon and that she would be thrust into the brave new world of a spaceship that lives by its own rules.

Amy quickly realizes that her awakening was no mere computer malfunction. Someone-one of the few thousand inhabitants of the spaceship-tried to kill her. And if Amy doesn't do something soon, her parents will be next.

Now Amy must race to unlock Godspeed's hidden secrets. But out of her list of murder suspects, there's only one who matters: Elder, the future leader of the ship and the love she could never have seen coming.

My Take: This book was “frexing” crazy! Yep, I gained a few new vocabulary words from reading this book and I’m lovin’ it! Problem is, is I’m having a hard time figuring out the correct way to use the word “chutz!” I’m thinking that it’s saying someone is crazy…if that is the case, then I would have to say that this book was frexing chutzy! Well, you get what I’m saying. OK, so now after writing that first paragraph, I did some asking around and I found out that calling someone a chutz would be like calling someone a man’s guy parts. So it’s not crazy. LoL

Anyways, when I first started reading Across the Universe and realized that this poor girl is going to be placed in a box to be frozen…and THEN realized that she is completely AWAKE while she is frozen…I was TOTALLY freakin’ out! I was thinking, “This girl is going to be frozen and yet awake for 301 YEARS???? What the frex?” BTW…this girl I’m talking about…her name is Amy and she REALLY didn’t even want to be frozen and leave earth and all of her friends. But could she really choose to remain on earth when her parents were flying through space to a new world?! Apparently not!

So, if you read the Publisher’s Summary, you’ll see that poor little Amy was thawed out 50 years too soon. And now she’s stuck on this spaceship and she will have to wait 50 years to see her parents! But wait!!! Someone also keeps trying to kill all the other frozen people on board the spaceship!!! The first frozen person to ever get unplugged was Amy, but now someone keeps trying to unplug, and kill, others!

OK, so back to my feelings about this book. A lot of the story is about this murder investigation and how a character named “Elder” is trying to train to become the next leader of the ship. But it’s the whole dynamic of Amy’s unfrozen life on the spaceship and the ship-crew’s truly bizarre lifestyle that had me intrigued. It’s totally FREXING bizarre…in a way that I cannot even begin to describe. You REALLY need to read it for yourself to see and understand what I mean. And lastly, there is this CRAZY, awful…but at the same time…TOTALLY awesome twist that happens at the very end of the book that made me immediately pick up and start reading A Million Suns!

  3. Yes, this book is frexing awesome and crazy! It was one of my favorites from last year, and I can't wait to read A Million Suns. Amazon just shipped it out to me, so yay!

Great review, btw. It was so sad to see how Amy's whole world had to change and become so bizarre, but Elder totally makes up for that. He's amazing.

  5. I'd heard this was a little slow but I've had trouble taking it off the TBR list, especially since the library has it. Interesting...did you think it was slowish?
